Headache, neck pain and TMJ

 

Vascular

  • Fast onset
  • Frontal/temporal
  • Throbbing pain
  • Triggered by food, drugs, stress
  • Treatment: avoid precipitating factors, drugs, stress reduction

Cervical

  • Slow onset
  • Occipital, retro-orbital or temporal
  • Dull ache pain
  • Common history of trauma
  • Posture
  • Treated by: Manual therapy, stress reduction, postural correction

Muscles and joints in the neck and upper back are often placed under a lot of strain due to poor posture, tension, stress and accidents.

Postural syndromes

  • Rounded shoulders, forward poking chin
  • Time spent in front of computer
  • Burning aching pain across shoulders and neck, pain at base of skull
  • Tight neck and upper back joints
  • Tight neck and shoulder muscles with presence of trigger points (knots)
  • Tension in nerves

Acute wry neck

  • Sudden onset of sharp neck pain with deformity and movement restriction
  • After sudden movement or when waking in the morning
  • Locking of joint (apophyseal wry neck)
  • Prolong abnormal postures (discogenic wry neck)

Whiplash

  • Motor vechicle accidents
  • Neck pain, headache, stiffness
  • Muscles, joints or neural tissue might be affected
  • Early treatment is essential

Acute Nerve root pain

  • Moderate to severe arm pain with or without neck pain
  • Compression/irritation of the nerve root

Jaw pain and dysfunction as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint (TMJ) and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and jaw movement.

Causes:

  • Injury to jaw or muscles of the head and neck eg. Whiplash
  • Grinding and clenching of teeth
  • Dislocation of the disc between the ball and socket of the joint
  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the TMJ
  • Stress causing clenching of teeth and tightening of facial and jaw muscles
